The Barista in Me

Thursday, August 31st, 2006

As some of you know, I am a certified European Barista.  I took a coffee tasting course and learned how to make many premium beverages.  It has been about 3 years since I’ve owned my own machine though.  The last one I had was worth about 3000 dollars, so I sold it and bought backpacking gear which went with me to Belize, Florida, North Carolina, The Dominican Republic and of Course most recently; Lake Superior Provincial Park.

Now I present you: My 20 dollar Hamilton Beach from the pawn shop…

2006-08-24 046What an Adventure this was.  Luke and I spent 4 amazing days hiking the coastal trail.  After Doing Devils Chair to Bald Head River in TWO days we felt pretty good.

The 30k hike we did was through the hardest part of the whole trail.  Tuesday morning I got mauled by two hives of yellow jackets and was stung in the calves about 15 times.  Apparently my body is not proficient in dealing with that much venom: My legs swelled up and I could no longer walk.  So on the fifth day, swollen legs and a torn ligament in my knee, we hiked the 2.5k out the Orphan Lake trail and hitch-hiked home.

We’d hoped to be out in the wild until Friday, but after getting within range of the parking lot, we started running into “Day-Trippers” and their pis-cutter dogs…so the trail felt less rugged and we felt more like the best part of our hike was over.  So instead of recovering for a day and pressing on, we checked out.  Plus, I had to crap…and aqua dumping on a public beach is not exactly a “Socially Acceptable” act.

We’re Actually Going…Tonight.

Friday, August 18th, 2006

Luke DuFour and I are leaving tonight to go on a Seven day hiking trip through Lake Superiro Provincial Park. WE’ll leave tonight for Gargantua bay, where we’ll make camp for the first night to get an early start in the morning.

Our trip will take us from Gargantua, up to Warp bay and the fishermans village (long abandoned), then back down past Gargantua Bay to Sault Ste. Marie.

This epic journey will be photographed and I’ll be building a page for it when I get home.

A week off work, a trip with a good friend, possibly some whiskey and cigars.

Life is good.

Mercy Moves Me

Walls caving, roof staying
Candlelight, the darkness flaying.
Nothing remains, yet hope is contained
While despair grows and dreams wane.
The ebb and flow of Spirit’s growth
a heart ensnared to death betrothed…

Life glitters Dream flitters
Spirit fills a Heart with Shivers
Starlight falls on sparkling eyes
Resolve grows and something dies
The rise and fall of Breathing
Anger, Hatred; both retreating.
